La médicalisation de la société et la pensée mécaniste alimentent la formation de symptômes somatomorphes. Le non-remboursement de consultations de psychologues, ainsi que la réticence commune à l'égard de la psychiatrie, contribuent au fait qu'un certain nombre de personnes s'adressent à un médecin somaticien. De ce fait, les "malades", pour rendre leur plainte "présentable" au médecin, mettent en forme somatique leur souffrance psychique ou sociale.
